Abstraction Today is four exhibitions in one. The featured exhibition showcases the remarkable works of Suzanne Jackson who explores color and texture in her large-scale work. Masters of Abstractions includes works by artists who pioneered this remarkable approach to art including Richard Diebenkorn, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns and Joan Mitchell, among others. On the Earth, Of the Earth, showcasing the intimate works of rich color by Newport News artist Ray Abell, contrasts with the gallery-sized installation of another city resident, E. Angelina Shaw in Ascending Journey.

Don’t let Artful Holidays fool you – we are filled with art of the most intriguing and delightful sort. Our holiday exhibitions highlight the unique visions of three remarkable artists. You’ll see a retrospective of the noted American artist Walter Anderson. Part folk artist, part pure modernist, Anderson’s work combines stylistic ingenuity and nature in a way that is a unique artistic signature. The exhibition comes from the Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Two regional artists will also be featured. Michelle Erickson is famed for her remarkable pottery and we will have a number of her most intriguing and innovative forms on view. And we will celebrate the holidays with the one-of-a-kind work by Newport News’ Anderson Johnson, who has found a place among America’s most dynamic self-taught artists.
